Painter and photographer Casper Faassen grew up in Leiden, The Netherlands, where he developed his love the fine arts, inspired by the realistic, classical paintings of once Leiden-based painters such as Gerard Dou, Rembrandt and Jan Steen.
For the Morandi Series (2018), Faassen drew inspiration from the world-renowned artist Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964). In the 1940s and 50s Morandi created a large amount of still life paintings in subtle and tonal colours. His subjects were vases, glasses and jars that he kept in his studio. The still lives are almost an ode to painting itself, where Morandi explores the very essence of the medium. In this series, by channeling Morandi, Faassen puts the focus on the essence of his own work, the meeting place of painting and photography. With the varying arrangements of objects in the same muted tones as the Italian master, Faassen brings his work to a new simplicity – and to new heights.
