Painter and photographer Casper Faassen (1975) grew up in Leiden, The Netherlands, where he developed his love for the fine arts, inspired by the realistic, classical paintings of once Leiden-based painters such as Gerard Dou, Rembrandt and Jan Steen.
Solo and group-exhibitions at institutions such as Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden, The Japan Museum Leiden and Fotografiska Stockholm gave him broad recognition. Besides photography, Faassen works with painting and lithography. Portraits, landscapes, nudes, cityscapes and flowers, all traditional 17th century Dutch painterly subjects, are translated in his unique figurative language. His photographs are built up like paintings with different imaginary and physical layers, giving the viewer a feeling of distance and at the same time a voyeuristic presence. Both the paintings and the photo works are purified and rich at the same time, striving to have iconic value.
